While the newly built tower protected the village against the Cretan Rebels, during the revolution of 1897, 400 Turks were besieged closely by the troops of Timoleon Vassos (6-7 February 1897) till they were forced out at night. Beautiful villages surround Voukolies and hiking is popular in the region. The route Voukolies- Ano Kefala- Sebronas- Palea Roumata is a lovely route along the running waters of Tavronitis. No tourist facilities are found in Voukolies or the surrounding villages. The closest facilities are in the seaside villages of Kolimbari, Maleme and Platanias.
